 ENGINEERING STUDENTS: IF YOU KNOW HOW TO READ DRAWINGS, YOU CAN GET A JOB WHILE YOU ARE STILL IN SCHOOL!

Today I have some important advice for all Engineering students, especially Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering and construction-related fields.

There is a huge opportunity in the construction industry that many students don’t see early on — and that is the ability to read and interpret construction drawings.

The sad truth is that many people working in the construction industry still have the challenge of reading drawings fluently. This has left a huge gap that young people with this skill can use to generate income even before graduation.

A few years ago I met with engineering students who were in the field in Mbeya region. We talked about many things about life after college, but one piece of advice I gave them was this:

👉 Learn to read drawings to a high standard.

They took that advice seriously and started practicing in practice on various construction projects. Within a few months, they were already getting part-time jobs helping contractors, technicians, and project managers read and interpret blueprints, while getting paid well.

Today, the ability to read blueprints has become one of the most sought-after skills in many construction projects.

If you are still in college:

✅ Learn to read Architectural Drawings

✅ Learn to read Structural Drawings

✅ Visit the site regularly

✅ Compare what is being built with what is on the drawings

✅ Ask experienced engineers questions

✅ Practice every chance you get

Remember, many engineers graduate with a lot of theory but little practical skills. Don't be one of them.

If you are good at reading blueprints, you can find job opportunities, internships, project management, and even earn a living while you are still a student.
