FIRE BRICKS vs BLOCK

Fire Bricks vs Block – Which is Better for Building a House in Tanzania

COMPARISON OF FIRE BRICKS AND BLOCK BRICKS IN CONSTRUCTION

In terms of cost and durability, fire bricks are often a better option than block bricks. However, the biggest challenge is that most urban craftsmen do not have much experience building with fire bricks.

For example, prices:

Fire bricks can be sold for about Tsh 200 per brick.

Block bricks can be sold for about Tsh 1,200 per brick.

 Typically:

Block 1,000 ≈ 3,500 fired bricks

So the cost is approximately:

Fired bricks: 3,500 × 200 = Tsh 700,000

Block bricks: 1,000 × 1,200 = Tsh 1,200,000

With this calculation, you will clearly see that fired bricks reduce construction costs significantly.

Advantages of Fired Bricks

✔ Low construction costs

✔ Clay does not have an expiration date unlike cement

✔ It is possible to reduce the use of cement by using clay in some construction areas

Usually:

The corners of the house and under the lintel use cement.

Other parts of the walls can be built with clay to reduce costs.

Currently, the price of cement in many areas is between Tsh 20,000 – 25,000 per bag, so reducing its use is a great benefit to the builder.

 Best Places

Based on experience from many areas in the Lake Zone, Mbeya and surrounding areas, using fired bricks with a stone foundation is a very good option, especially if the materials are readily available.

Key Points to Consider

✔ Build during the dry season

✔ Make sure you use a craftsman with experience in building with fired bricks

Remember

Even if a house is built with great quality, after about 60–80 years, the strength of the cement gradually decreases and can cause some parts to collapse.
